Synopsis
Rue and the crew of the Spotted Custard return from India with revelations that shake the foundations of England’s scientific community. Queen Victoria is not amused, the vampires are tetchy, and something is wrong with the local werewolf pack. To top it all off, Rue’s best friend Primrose keeps getting engaged to the most unacceptable military types.

Rue has family problems as well. Her vampire father is angry, her werewolf father is crazy, and her obstreperous mother is both. Worst of all, Rue’s beginning to suspect what they really are… is frightened.

Read-along
Midway through 2018, I decided that I wanted to read the books from Gail Carriger’s Parasolverse in chronological order. This led me to start the journey of the Parasolverse Read-Along in August 2018. If you would like more information about the read-along please visit my post about it here. At the beginning of each month, I will have a brief read-along post go up letting you know what the book for that month is.

What I thought
This book is Rue’s journey in which she discovers that she can be loved and not be used as a pawn.  Don’t get me wrong none of her parents attempt to do that. Rue makes the statement that the only people that would be interested in her would be due to wanting some advantage with her parents.

Rue goes through most of this story avoiding how she feels, due to statements above. And then Quesnel, oh Quesnel, not understanding and thinking she felt nothing. What makes all of this so amusing is that all of this is obvious to everyone else aboard that Spotted Custard.

Alongside Rue’s story, you see the beginnings of Prim’s story, which is focused on in Competence and you don’t want to miss that.

I enjoyed this book so much more than the first one! The journey that Rue is on I feel that so many people can relate to, and seeing how it all works out was just beautiful!
