Hey Everyone,
So I have been going back and forth on whether or not I wanted to write this post. I finally decided to do it because I can’t be the only person that has ever felt this way. I started thinking about this hard earlier this month when I finished a series (Yay me!) but the last book was so disappointing that it ruined the series for me and put me in a two-week reading slump.
As I was putting the books back on my shelf I really starting looking at the books that I have and I realized that there are a few series that I have kept that I did not like the last book I read enough to continue on with them.
I have limited shelf space so why am I keeping books I will never read again? Why am I keeping series that I stopped reading and now feel that I need to go back to the beginning because I must have missed something? Yes, I’m looking at you Throne of Glass.
Answer: Some part of me felt like I had to.
Yes, I know how crazy this sounds. It’s like there is some standard that says you have to have certain books to taken seriously, or you have to read certain books to be considered legit. One it feels great and free to remove those books and tell myself that I don’t have to keep them, but I don’t know where these expectations I placed on myself came from.
In the end, I am going to be able to fit by books on my shelf’s better now after I finish purging. And I will not feel anxious about the books that I feel forced to read and keep.
Also, writing this post has just made me feel so much better. I guess in its own way I am admitting my issue and I feel better about it.
Does anyone else feel unreasonable expectations in their reading life or beyond?

I keep books because I’m a dragon and I like my board, I want to grow it! but I don’t feel pressure to own certain books or read certain books – I don’t like classics, I’m not sophisticated enough, soz! #kanyeshrug
I’ll admit, I have a copy of the Throne of Glass collector’s edition – not because I want to read it (I tried, it was meh), but because it’s pretty!

Good for you for purging!!! I used to “collect” all the books I could and this resulted in me having zero shelf space and a TON of books I would never read. I decided I had a problem and cleaned out my books. I did end up getting rid of a lot of books I had read and didn’t love. I still have a bit of that hoarders streak in my so new books I keep wanting to keep them, but I try and make myself only keep the ones I liked!

That is my plan moving forward. After writing this post I went back up stairs and removed the TOG series and I am going to look over what I still have again and really decide what I want to keep.

I’m definitely a fan of purging books I didn’t like and don’t think I’ll read again! Shelf space is limited, so why would I keep those books? Also, if you give them away, someone else could enjoy them

I did this just recently. I DNF’d a book but couldn’t bring myself to sell it or give it away. I mean, if I wish hard enough, maybe I could give it away and my copy of Artemis would magically return to me unharmed in exchange…
Anyway, I held onto it under the pretence that maybe my partner would like to read it. Or maybe I’ll give it a third chance to entertain me at a later date. I suspect the real reason is that it wasn’t a bad book, but not one I was finding entertaining, and having paid my money I want to keep a hold on it. At least for now.
