Top 5 Tuesday – Top 5 Books that weren’t what I expected

Top 5 Tuesday

Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm. It’s a weekly meme where you pick your top 5 books for a given topic.

This week’s topic is –  Top 5 Books that weren’t what I expected

Below are my thoughts and if we do not agree it’s okay.  I know some of you may want to come after me by the time I am done.

  1. City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare
This is the 4th book in the Mortal Instruments series.  To just be brief this book made me so mad I felt that her twist was very unnecessary and just created conflict to sell more books in this series.  Yes, you can come after me now. lol  I did read books 5 and 6 but I feel they were not enough to recover the series.
  2. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
I went into this book thinking it was going to be everything I needed and I just thought it fell flat.  I had no connection to anyone and just was not impressed.  I also think that I let the hype get to me and I just expected way too much.

  3. Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
I like a good retelling but this one just didn’t do it for me. I ended the book more confused then when I started it.  And I am just going to say it the love triangle was just weird.

  4. Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe by Melissa de la Cruz
LOL if you want you can read my review.

  5. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
This was supposed to be the greatest Fae story of all time, and I was so disappointed the only thing that caught me was the ending. Once again this could be a result of the hype building it up so much but either way, it was not what I expected it to be.

  1. I haven’t read any of the books you’ve listed, but then that’s not surprising as they’re not from my preferred reading genre. 😉
I try not to listen to hype (hard sometimes) and I have become more picky with the books I chose to read as I’ve aged. It doesn’t stop the odd stinker sneaking passed though. 😉
I hope that 2020 is full of more joyful surprises than bitter disappointments in both our book shelves. x

  2. haha I actually really agree with you about city of fallen angels! (and the books get more unnecessary over time as well) Shame about cruel beauty- I’ve been curious about it for a while. And I hear you about cruel prince- I see that as more of an entertaining series than a masterpiece (and a lot of the hype around it suggested it’d be a masterpiece) I guess I didn’t buy into the hype too much, cos I’d already read a couple of Holly Black books and knew what to expect. Great post!

    1. Thanks! Yea this was my first Holly Black so that didn’t help. Cruel Beauty wasn’t terrible they just didn’t explain anything. I still have no idea how the magic system is supposed to work. And there is a fair amount of magic in the book. So for me that took a lot away from it.
