Synopsis

Harley has three goals—stay alive, avenge her brother’s death, and overthrow the traitorous king.

When Harley receives an invitation to the royal castle for her cousin’s birthday, she’s elated at the offer. As the queen’s niece, she’s expected to make an appearance, but this will also be her first time attending a formal function as a married woman. However, what starts as an elegant party quickly turns into a nightmare. One that flips Harley’s world upside down.

Ackley’s mission should have been simple—arrive in Melenia, submerse himself in battle, and retake the kingdom for his sister’s newly betrothed, the rightful king. Instead, he finds the land ravaged and a young woman who could be the key to his undoing. When forced to choose between family, honor, and love, he realizes all of his years training to be an assassin, knight, and prince never prepared him for this. Ackley always thought he’d die by the sword. But what he never realized was love could be the most dangerous weapon of all.

This is the first book in a new series by Jennifer Anne Davis. Filled with romance, battles, and espionage, this book will immerse you into the world of her previous books like you’ve never before imagined!

What I thought

We got a book about Ackley!!

This is the first book in the Reigning Kingdoms duology.  This duology takes place in the same world as her other series.  I love how all of these series are independent and still take place in the same world.  It’s wonderful to not have to read all of her books just to know what is going on.  This allows you to start with whichever series you speaks to you the most. This also allows for little Easter eggs, you get to hear rumor’s about evens from the other series, but nothing that will spoil them for you.  Just little bits of intel from other kingdoms.

In this duology we focus on Ackley and Harley.  Ackley first appeared in the Knights of the Realm Series and I just adored his character.  Even though he appeared there, you still get just enough information about him in the beginning of this book so that you do not feel like you are missing anything.  However, this is the first time we meet Harley, and even though she is not as strong of a character as some of the other female characters in previous series, I still liked her.  I think that it has a lot to do with the fact that she appears to be strong in different ways from other female characters we have met in this world (if you have read them, you will know what I mean). I feel like Harley is a perfect balance for Ackley’s character, and we can all admit that Ackley needs some balance.  I think that one of the things that the author does well in all of her books is the balancing of all her characters.  Personally, I like it when the dynamic is balanced and not one is dominating over another.

Oh, and that ending, I really need to start reading the second book!

My Rating: /5
